Eligibility aka what constitutes a medium sized fandom for Not Prime Time?

RPF Fandoms
RPF is allowed within Not Prime Time and is an exception to the requirement of "a fandom that isn't listed on the current Yuletide nominations list." We do ask that participants keep to the spirit of the exchange and do not nominate/request very rare RPF as it will be harder to find a match for you. It is still held to the megafandoms requirement, however.

If your RPF pairing (as actors, as an example) haven't worked together on a project (like Jessica Alba and Michael Weatherly on Dark Angel RPF or Tyler Hoechlin and Tyler Posey on Teen Wolf RPF), you can nominate them under the umbrella Actor RPF category. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, however, are ineligible from Actor RPF, though they can be nominated under their other acting projects that isn't Supernatural RPF/CW RPF (ie Jensen Ackles can be nominated under Dark Angel RPF and Jared Padalecki can be nominated under Gilmore Girls RPF, etc).

Movie Fandoms
Movie fandoms with over 1000 stories on fanfiction.net and/or over 100 stories on AO3 will be considered medium sized fandoms, as long as they are not considered megafandoms as well. No other filters required (in English or completed or over 1000 words). Just straight numbers.

The reason for this is movie fandoms tend to have a shorter lifespan than other fandoms because of its smaller canon so we're adjusting for that.

Other Fandoms
For a non-RPF or non-movie fandom to be considered eligible for Not Prime Time, a fandom needs to be either considered ineligible for Yuletide via their rejected fandom list or surpass one or more of these guidelines, but not considered a megafandom:

-Is there 200+ stories, in English, over 1000 words on AO3?
-Is there 1000+ stories, in English, over 1000 words on fanfiction.net?
-Does the fandom have an existing, fandom-specific archives (including LJ comms) of more than 500 stories?
-Does it already have its own seasonal/holiday exchange?

By surpass, we mean if Fandom X has 201 stories, in English, over 1000 words on AO3, it's in. We're not going to play around with guessing games for both mods' and participants' sakes.

Notice that the 'completed' filter on both AO3 and fanfiction.net has been taken out. This is mainly due to the fact that when fanfiction.net instituted the completed/incomplete filter, many older, completed works were grandfathered in as incomplete.

For the most part, if the individual fandoms of a franchise are not eligible, the franchise as a whole can be eligible and nominated (an example from the 2013 round: None of the Fire Emblem individual games were eligible for NPT, but the Fire Emblem franchise as a whole was). However, if an individual fandom is eligible, the franchise will not be (example: Final Fantasy XII is eligible on its own, therefore Final Fantasy as a franchise is not eligible). If needed, things will be taken by a case by case basis.

Yes, this means, between all three categories of fandoms, there will be overlap of fandoms between Yuletide and Not Prime Time. We are okay with this as this gives more opportunities for the borderline fandoms to be written. It also means Not Prime Time does not have to change its eligibility rules to exactly match Yuletide's year by year.

Megafandoms
Those fandoms listed on our megafandom list (on DW) are considered ineligible for Not Prime Time. These are fandoms that have been documented with over 20,000 stories. This is based on straight numbers and has nothing to do with over a minimum of words for each story, activeness of a fandom, quality, or location of its archive.

The list is locked every beginning of March in order to stabilize both nominations and sign ups in case of fandoms being revealed they're mega in size after the fact (so no one has to change their nominations or their requests). The list opens for suggestions after a round is closed for the year.

This threshold may change in the future (if the megafandoms list numbered in the hundreds and/or grows lopsided in comparison to the amount of NPT nominations in that megafandoms outnumber NPT fandoms), but for now, this is the current threshold.

I have a question about the franchise rule. I'll use Final Fantasy for my example. I haven't checked, but I am pretty sure something like Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 would both have enough fics to qualify individually. Does the new franchise rule mean they would have to be nominated separately, despite one being a sequel to the other and sharing a lot of characters, or could they still be nominated as the Final Fantasy X & Final Fantasy X-2 fandom?

They can still be nominated as one fandom - Final Fantasy X & Final Fantasy X-2. The franchise rule is more for the overarching franchise, not the subparts that could be connected if they're more sequels to each other than just sharing the [Whatever Fandom] name.

How are comics fandoms going to be handled? Right now it looks like some characters have been bundled into Marvel or DC, and some are sorted under their specific fandom (i.e. Young Avengers).

This is one of the case by case basis that was stated above though wasn't put into further detail, but comics will be treated like certain movie fandoms* in that if the fandom nominated meets eligibility (Other Fandoms numbers from above for comic fandoms), then it will be eligible. So as a movie fandom example, if someone wanted to nominate Skyfall, James Bond (Craig movies), and James Bond (Movies), since all three are eligible, it will be approved.

The first comic nominations were, as they were, DCU (Comics) and Marvel (Comics) followed later in the day by Young Avengers. Someone who asked me this question earlier told me they plan on nominating Marvel 616 once they finalize their character noms. That's fine by us as it gives flexibility to comic participants who may want certain, specific things or want more range in their nomination/requests. But if someone requested, as an example, Marvel Divas (listed on AO3 as 4 works, didn't check FFN but let's pretend there's only 4 works for it), Marvel Divas wouldn't be eligible.

*Some characters may travel between comic fandom nominations due to that traveling AO3 bug. People can either comment about traveling characters now or during corrections and it'll get fixed during corrections.
*This flexibility is only for comic fandoms, not comic movie fandoms. For the latter, it's only the grouping of a super hero's movies allowed (as an example, Captain America (movies)) until they're megafandoms and not The Avengers movie and its upcoming sequel(s) or Marvel Cinematic Universe.
*If Marvel (Comics) or DC (Comics) reaches over 20k, then those two particular options wouldn't be allowed as they become megafandoms, but the subfandom groupings would still be fine until they're one day listed as megafandoms. But as of right now, it's all good on our end.

Thanks for the quick response. Just to be sure I understand this right, are you saying that as long as both the parent fandom and the more specific subfandom are both eligible, both could be nominated and approved separately, without necessarily being merged in the tagset?

For comic fandoms, you are correct. However our participants want to nominate their comics fandoms, as long as there's over 200 works on AO3 for that particular grouping (or 1000 fics on FFN or whatnot), it's good on our end. I don't foresee any reason for merging, but if there is, it'll be asked in a clarification post.

Wait, I'm confused. HP is on the megafandom list but also (very heavily) in the 2015 tag set? Did a definition change somewhere without updating?

Normally, yes, Harry Potter would and is considered a megafandom. However, it got voted in. During the off months, NPT held an event called Lucky Number Seven where, to reward past participants who went went above and beyond by writing full length treats, pinch hits, and Hiatus fics. They got to vote in 7 fandoms from the megafandom list. Those megafandoms are: Avengers, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Sailor Moon, Star Wars, Vampire Diaries, and X-Files.

I'm still working through approving nominations, so thank you for that. I did see those fandoms, but since I didn't see any characters/relationships nominated with them, I was going to wait on them for a bit while I worked on other nominations.

Do you see an X next to those relationships or a !?, because if it's the latter, I haven't approved or rejected them yet and that's probably because it's not on my panel yet.

Okay, I reached the DS9 and Voygaer nominations. Those 3 tags were there unapproved (but not rejected). Judging from your images, it's not that I rejected them but they're an X so you can delete them if you wanted to if you clicked on that X.

I'm about to approve those nominations though, so I wouldn't recommend trying that out just now. :D
